Ulangan 5:14-15

5:14 but the seventh day is the Sabbath ¹  of the Lord your God. On that day you must not do any work, you, your son, your daughter, your male slave, your female slave, your ox, your donkey, any other animal, or the foreigner who lives with you, ²  so that your male and female slaves, like yourself, may have rest. 5:15 Recall that you were slaves in the land of Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there by strength and power. ³  That is why the Lord your God has commanded you to observe ⁴  the Sabbath day.

Ulangan 14:23

14:23 In the presence of the Lord your God you must eat from the tithe of your grain, your new wine, ⁵  your olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the place he chooses to locate his name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always.

Ulangan 16:11

16:11 You shall rejoice before him ⁶  – you, your son, your daughter, your male and female slaves, the Levites in your villages, ⁷  the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows among you – in the place where the Lord chooses to locate his name.

Ulangan 23:14

23:14 For the Lord your God walks about in the middle of your camp to deliver you and defeat ⁸  your enemies for you. Therefore your camp should be holy, so that he does not see anything indecent ⁹  among you and turn away from you.

Ulangan 24:5

24:5 When a man is newly married, he need not go into ¹⁰  the army nor be obligated in any way; he must be free to stay at home for a full year and bring joy to ¹¹  the wife he has married.

Ulangan 25:19

25:19 So when the Lord your God gives you relief from all the enemies who surround you in the land he ¹²  is giving you as an inheritance, ¹³  you must wipe out the memory of the Amalekites from under heaven ¹⁴  – do not forget! ¹⁵ 

Ulangan 30:10

30:10 if you obey the Lord your God and keep his commandments and statutes that are written in this scroll of the law. But you must turn to him ¹⁶  with your whole mind and being.

[5:14]  ¹ tn There is some degree of paronomasia (wordplay) here: “the seventh (הַשְּׁבִיעִי, hashÿvi’i) day is the Sabbath (שַׁבָּת, shabbat).” Otherwise, the words have nothing in common, since “Sabbath” is derived from the verb שָׁבַת (shavat, “to cease”).

[5:15]  ³ tn Heb “by a strong hand and an outstretched arm,” the hand and arm symbolizing divine activity and strength. Cf. NLT “with amazing power and mighty deeds.”

There are some aspects of human life that are so personal and private that they ought not be publicly paraded. Cultically speaking, even God is offended by such impropriety (cf. Gen 9:22-23; Lev 18:6-12, 16-19; 20:11, 17-21). See B. Seevers, NIDOTTE 3:528-30.

[24:5]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “go out with.”

[24:5]  ¹¹ tc For the MT’s reading Piel שִׂמַּח (simmakh, “bring joy to”), the Syriac and others read שָׂמַח (samakh, “enjoy”).

[25:19]  ¹² tn Heb “ the Lord your God.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons to avoid redundancy.

[25:19]  ¹⁴ tn Or “from beneath the sky.” The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heaven(s)” or “sky” depending on the context.
